Memory increase associated with program speed and multi tasking?

I use my computer for Internet surfing, Picture Editing, Video Editing, listening to music, and stuff like that. Maybe the sims 2 now and then. Right now, I have 256 MB of RAM, I recently purchased and will upgrade to 1 GB of Ram. It is two 512 Sticks. My main question is: Will Gimp, iTunes, and multi-tasking work smoother. What about the Sims 2?

1. it sure will help make stuff smoother but it also depends on your processor too and for sims , it depends on your video card too
